THE BRONX - Some NYPD officers took their daily assignments from a Bronx teen on Thursday.

Equality Charter School student Lacey Smith was given a commanding officer position with the NYPD for the day and got to meet Police Commissioner Bill Bratton.

Smith was one of 125 students given the opportunity for winning the NYPD's police commissioner for a day essay contest.

She wrote about watching her friend change after being influenced by a gang. The NYPD says it received more than 1,000 submissions.

Favrol Philemy, principal of Equality Charter School says Smith "truly embodies the qualities and values that we hope for all of our kids. We are really, really proud of her."

Smith says the experience has given her a different perspective about police officers.
