THE BRONX - A program designed to help Bronx veterans who are facing felony charges was made public today at the Bronx County Hall of Justice.

The new Bronx Veteran’s Treatment Court aims at helping veterans seek treatment for mental health or drug-related issues as an alternative to incarceration. It will also assist them to find housing and receive job training.

Justice Leonard Livote will oversee the program as the presiding judge of the special court. He says the vets will be assigned a mentor who will help them complete the program.

Upon competition, charges may be lowered to a misdemeanor or, in some cases, dismissed.

The court currently has 22 cases. Organizers say they hope to expand the program throughout the borough.
