THE BRONX - A Bronx woman accused of being a polygamist has pleaded not guilty to felony charges.

According to prosecutors, 39-year-old Liana Barrientos has been married 10 times without divorcing, starting with her first marriage in 1999. She was then married twice more in 2001 and became a bride six more times in 2002 alone.

Her 10th marriage was in the Bronx in 2010, which launched the investigation into her nuptials because she put on the marriage license that she had never wed before. Barrientos is believed to be currently married to four of her husbands, but was at one time married to eight at the same time.

Authorities say her husbands are from so-called "red-flagged" countries, which include Egypt, Turkey, Georgia, Pakistan and Mali. Once married, the grooms would file for permanent residence statuses, with some divorcing Barrientos afterward, and some paying her money.

Prosecutors say that Barrientos’s multiple marriages spanned from 1999 to 2010. They say that she filed fraudulent marriage licenses six times in Long Island and Westchester in one year alone.

Barrientos faces two counts of offering a false instrument for filing, and could be sentenced to up to four years in prison if convicted.
