BX businesses collect hair, fur to aid Gulf oil spill

Hair salons and pet groomers in the Bronx are collecting hair and fur that they cut to help relief efforts of the Gulf oil spill

THE BRONX - Hair salons and pet groomers in the Bronx are collecting hair and fur that they cut to help relief efforts of the Gulf oil spill disaster.

Originally, BP suggested to the Coast Guard that hair be used as an alternative method of containing the leaking oil and cleaning the mess. However, worries that the hair could further contaminate the area have the Coast Guard reluctant to accept donations.

The hesitation hasn?t hindered the collection efforts of Christina?s Hair Work and Maria?s Pet Shop, which has already collected more than 25 pounds of fur. Both businesses intend on sending out their donations out within the next few days, saying they feel responsible to somehow pitch in with the containment and cleaning efforts.
