BX man drowns at Rockaway Beach

THE BRONX - Police say a Bronx man drowned off Rockaway Beach in Queens Friday night.

Family members of 22-year-old Oscar Cruz say he was swimming in shallow water with his girlfriend when a strong current pulled him under. Cruz's family says he didn't know how to swim.

A Parks Department spokesperson says lifeguards went off duty at 6 p.m. and Cruz and his girlfriend were swimming at around 8 p.m.

Friends and family say they have spoken with detectives and they want the proper authorities to do a thorough investigation to find out exactly what happened.
