FORDHAM - Bronx Dominicans of Haitian descent rallied against racism Saturday in Fordham as other protesters voiced support for proposed deportations in the island country.

They met for a "Black Lives Matter" protest at Fordham Road and Webster Avenue.

Hundreds of thousands in the Dominican Republic, situated on one half of an island shared with Haiti, face uncertainty after Wednesday's deadline for migrant workers to apply for legal residency.

The government there has said it will deport everyone who doesn't obtain legal status.

Of the estimated 500,000 Haitian migrants living in the Dominican Republic, officials say only about half applied for legal residency. Of those, only about 10,000 supplied the required documents.

Some protesters say the move represents anti-Haitian sentiment, while others say a sovereign country has the right to deport illegal residents.
