BX residents warned to prepare for Hurricane Irene

CITY ISLAND - City officials are warning Bronx residents today to take certain precautions in case Hurricane Irene strikes.

The city's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is urging residents to put together emergency kits containing items such as water, non-perishable canned foods, first aid supplies and personal hygiene products.

In addition, residents are urged to have a "go" bag in case there are evacuations. Officials recommend placing items like Social Security cards and passports in waterproof containers and then into the "go" bag. They also say keep a list of medications and a regional map inside the bag.

Some residents, including those living on City Island, say they are not really worried and don't see a need to prepare just yet.
