BX students kick off anti-tobacco initiative

HIGHBRIDGE - A group of Bronx kids took a stand today against the big, glossy tobacco and cigarette ads that have been popping up in Highbridge storefronts.

The students lead tours around their neighborhood as part of an anti-tobacco initiative, showing local officials first hand what they see on a daily basis. The students say that being bombarded with so many ads entices them to pick up the habit.

Anti-tobacco advocates say that 90 percent of smokers pick up the habit before they turn 18 years old. Community leaders applauded the students' effort, saying the initiative will be one of many to discourage smoking among young people.
