BX teacher suffers miscarriage after trying to break up fight

The city?s teachers? union and Department of Education officials are examining teacher safety after a Bronx educator suffered a miscarriage after trying to break up

CLAREMONT - The city?s teachers? union and Department of Education officials are examining teacher safety after a Bronx educator suffered a miscarriage after trying to break up a student fight.

Officials say the teacher, Lissedia Batista, 27, was pushed out of the way and fell to the floor as she tried to stop a fight between two male students at Explorations Academy Wednesday morning.

Batista, who was four months pregnant, was taken by ambulance to North Central Bronx Hospital just before noon. Union officials say the incident raises questions if city teachers have enough protection in the schools they work at.

United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew says he will continue to put pressure on education officials to develop specific plans that will help prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
