Cano and Nova lead Yanks past Tigers

NEW YORK - (AP) - One rainy day after Game 1 started, RobinsonCano and the New York Yankees slammed their way to a blowout.

Cano hit a grand slam and drove in six runs, rookie Ivan Novapitched brilliantly into the ninth inning in an unusual reliefappearance and New York shook off a 23-hour delay to beat theDetroit Tigers 9-3 Saturday night in their suspended playoffopener.

A day after showers wiped out aces Justin Verlander and CCSabathia after only 1½ innings, play resumed in the bottom of thesecond with two new pitchers on the mound.

Cano barely missed a homer on his tiebreaking double in thefifth and New York broke it open with a six-run sixth againstlosing pitcher Doug Fister. Brett Gardner had a two-run single onan 0-2 pitch with two outs to make it 4-1 and, moments later, Canoconnected off Al Alburquerque for his fourth grand slam since Aug.11.

"My goal is just to win it all," Cano said.

Cano added a run-scoring double in the eighth to tie a clubrecord for RBIs in a postseason game - this is New York's 50thpostseason appearance. His seventh career postseason homer was the11th slam in Yankees postseason history and the first since RickyLedee connected in the 1999 AL championship series against Boston.

Nova was demoted to the minors for most of July to open a rosterspot when Phil Hughes came off the disabled list. But theright-hander won his final 12 decisions during the regular seasonand picked up where Sabathia left off Friday, pitching shutout ballinto the ninth before 50,940 fans - the largest crowd at the newYankee Stadium.
