THE BRONX - City and state officials have reached a tentative deal to more than double the number of charter schools.

If approved the measure would bring the total number of schools to 200. Supporters say the deal could bring New York closer to winning $700,000 in federal funds.

The legislation would have to be approved by June 1 to make the deadline for federal funds.
