Chicken coops hatching in the Bronx

THE BRONX - Chicken coops are popping up all over the Bronx thanks to a nonprofit organization that shows residents the benefits of raising the birds, including more than just eggs.

Just Food develops programming to encourage residents to pursue community gardening and create chicken coops to connect them with fresh food.

?They?re like my pets,? says Bronx chicken caretaker Cheryl Holt. ?I come in the morning; they look at me waiting to be fed. It?s a labor of love.?

The chickens not only provide fresh eggs, but also fertilizer for the garden. The eggs are then sold at local farmers markets and the funds go back into the garden.
