RIVERDALE - A big clumsy bug is coming out of hibernation and will swarm on the Bronx this year.

Cicadas will be around for a short season, but they stir up quite a buzz every 17 years.

A cicada tracking web program says the bug's mating call has been heard in Riverdale.

The bugs spend nearly 17 years underground as nymphs, feeding on tree roots. When the ground reaches the right temperature, they crawl outside, spend a few days in a hardened cocoon, then grow wings and fly away.

Adult cicadas spend the remaining four weeks of their life looking to mate. They attract each other with a loud buzzing sound.

Experts say cicadas do not bite or sting, but they are known to be clumsy and bump into people.
