THE BRONX - The City Council has overwhelmingly approved plans to transform the old Kingsbridge Armory into a massive ice center.

With a vote of 48-1, council members made it clear that they support the Kingsbridge National Ice Center, which is expected to bring living wage jobs to the Bronx.

Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and many residents say they're happy the project cleared such a critical hurdle, and they’re looking forward to the positive changes it will bring to the community in 2017.

Some critics of the ice center wanted the vacant space used as a mall or school.
