THE BRONX - Health officials looking to prevent future Legionnaires' outbreaks are turning to informative sessions.

A public forum was held Thursday at the South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation, located on Bergen Avenue. Its goal was to inform building owners how to properly clean their cooling towers.

Under new regulations, building owners are required to have a maintenance plan and undergo quarterly inspections. The owners must also disinfect cooling towers within 14 days of receiving an order, as well as keep inspection and maintenance records.

The Legionnaires' outbreak in the South Bronx killed 12 and sickened more than 100 people. The Health Department determined the source of the outbreak was the Opera House Hotel, which was recently slapped with a lawsuit by a Legionnaires' patient.
