THE BRONX - City Island residents are taking their fight to Washington against a new, modern-style bridge in their community.

The City Island Chamber of Commerce has written a letter to New York Senators Chuck Schumer and Kristen Gillibrand, asking for help putting funding on hold for the project.

The chamber and many residents argue that a more traditional design, similar to the current century-old bridge, would not only be cheaper, but would also fit the character of the island better.

The Department of Transportation says the current bridge is far past its intended life span and shows significant deterioration, meaning plans for the new bridge must move forward.
