City Island residents have new hope in bridge design battle

Many are optimistic about getting a new design passed under a new mayoral administration. (4/18/14)

THE BRONX - There may be a light at the end of the bridge for City Island residents who oppose the design for their new water crossing.

The design for the brand new City Island Bridge was handed over during former Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration, and now many are hopeful that there's still time to halt the plans with a new mayor in office and a new commissioner at the Department of Transportation.

Local lawmakers will be meeting with the DOT to try to come up with an alternative bridge, but the clock is ticking. A new design needs to happen by next month in order to get the proper permits.

Construction is already underway on the replacement bridge, which residents argue doesn't fit the character and charm of their neighborhood.
