THE BRONX - City Island’s temporary bridge opened Friday morning.

The new span comes after the historic City Island Bridge sustained structural damage in September. Officials say bent steel and beams could be seen on the western end of the bridge.

The temporary bridge consists of three lanes, including one middle lane for emergency vehicles. It is located right next to the permanent bridge still under construction.

Officials say the permanent bridge is set to open in December 2016.
