THE BRONX - The New York Public Library is giving its young patrons an opportunity to wipe clear their outstanding fees under a new overdue fee amnesty initiative.

The initiative, which began Monday, offers credits against an overdue account in exchange for time spent reading.

The program applies to patrons under the age of 18. Once a borrower reaches $15 in overdue fines they are not able to check out books any longer. The library says the initiative would encourage young people to read and provide a novel way to pay off fines.

For every 15 minutes that patrons read, they can reduce their overdue fines by a dollar. Patrons can log their hours on an honor system on the library website.
