NEW YORK - (AP)- New York City's iconic taxi fleet is getting aJapanese makeover

City officials announced Tuesday that they had picked Nissan tosupply the fleet for the next 10 years. The Japanese automaker beatout Ford Motor Co. and Karsan in a contest for the rights toanchor the fleet.

Nissan's tall, boxy NV200 minivan is already in use as a taxi insome other parts of the globe.

This marks the first time New York City has worked directly withautomakers to design its taxicab model.

The anchor of the city's current fleet of more than 13,200 taxisis Ford's Crown Victoria, which was recently discontinued.
