A group that advocates for the homeless challenged the dataissued Thursday.

The Department of Homeless Services said an outreach surveyfound 2,648 homeless people living on the streets of New York City.

It says that is a 15 percent decline from 2010 and a 40 percentreduction since 2005.

The Coalition for the Homeless says the survey only countedpeople found "in visible areas on a single, bitterly cold night."

The city says the numbers are reliable. It says nearly 3,000volunteers helped with the project.
