City votes to change taxi driver dress code

NEW YORK - (AP) - New York City officials have changed a rulegoverning what taxi drivers can wear - and it's not too shabby.

The city's Taxi and Limousine Commission voted unanimously toamend existing regulations to require that drivers maintain "aprofessional appearance."

The previous rule had prohibited specific clothing from beingworn as outerwear, such as underwear, tank tops, and swimwear.

The new rule emphasizes broad parameters, that a driver'soverall appearance has to be neat, clean and professional. TLCCommissioner David Yassky says ethnic and religious garb arewelcome.

Drivers will face a $25 fine for any violation, but Yasskyinsisted before Thursday's vote that there would be no fashionpolice.
