THE BRONX - Claremont Village businesses are lighting up the night to make streets safer.

The move comes after two fatal shootings and an assault on an MTA driver on the same block.

A few weeks ago, community activist Sidney Flores asked businesses on East 170th Street and College Avenue to keep their lights on throughout the night to help reduce crime.

Flores says that so far, seven businesses have agreed to keep their lights on throughout the night, which is about half of the block. He's hoping to get all of them on board in the near future.

Business owner Ingrid Morel says the higher electricity bill is worth it.

"I feel safer now because I leave the lights on the next day. I'm not only doing it for myself and the business but for the community,” she says.

Flores says he is reaching out to elected officials in the hope of getting brighter light bulbs put into the street lamps on the block.
