CO-OP CITY - Public safety officers in Co-op City will soon be wearing body cameras.

"Every single police officer -- detectives and supervisors -- will be carrying a body camera," says Chief Frank Apollo, of the Co-op City Public Safety Department.

Apollo says the department began exploring the idea in 2013 and found it had support from officers and residents alike.

The cameras will be supplied by Axon, a public safety technology company and subsidiary of Taser International.

Authorities say the cameras record in high definition with advanced audio capabilities. Their videos will be automatically uploaded to a cloud-based server. Officers will have to turn them on when they leave headquarters.

The department says the cameras will help build trust between officers and the community.
