THE BRONX - A biology and physiology professor is teaching a class of sixth-graders how to build and maintain a vegetable garden in their classroom.

Dr. Benjamin Lucas, a professor at Yeshiva University, got together with students at Bronx Writing Academy to help them create their own hydroponic vegetable gardens without using soil.

Lucas says that the project is meant to teach the students about the science behind how plants live and grow.

"The ultimate goal is for them to be inspired and know that they can change their community by doing simple things," said Bronx Writing Academy Principal Kamar Samuels.

The idea for the garden project came from the school’s partnership with a nonprofit organization that helps provide programs to students in low income communities.
