Community-based garden breaks ground

HUNTS POINT - Residents took part in a groundbreaking ceremony today celebrating Hunts Point's first community-based home garden.

Those who attended the event were able to plant vegetables and herbs at the Hunts Point Riverside Park.

Organizers say when the produce is ready for harvesting, residents will get a taste of the food. According to organizers, the rest of the food will be divided between a local church, senior center, community kitchen and struggling small businesses to sell.

The garden is just one of four home farms to be planted in New York City.
