Congregants: Scammer posing as rabbi

BRONX - Congregants say a man posing as their rabbi, Avi Weiss, has called several members of the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale asking for donations in a telephone scam.

Since the end of last year, congregants received phone calls asking for their credit card numbers to make a donation to the synagogue.

The institution typically does not call its congregants for fundraising. None of the congregants were victims of the scam, said Rabbi Steven Exler, who is with the congregation.

The synagogue e-mailed congregants to alert them of the scam. Anyone who feels they have been a victim of this scam should notify authorities and their financial institution.
