THE BRONX - Construction has kicked off on a major overhaul project for Fordham Plaza and its surrounding area.

The city's Department of Design and Construction is turning Third Avenue, between East Fordham Road and East 189th Street, into a bus-only road. Also slated for redesign is North 189th Street between Third and Webster avenues, which will be converted into a one-way road going westbound.

The entire plaza will be getting a facelift, with other road repairs, newly planted trees, and new catch basins and fire hydrants. The work has forced the neighborhood's fruit stands and cafes to temporarily shut down.

Crews will be working Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. It's expected to be completed by the spring of 2014.
