THE BRONX - Cooling centers opened across the city today as a heat wave swept over the borough.

The high temperatures and humidity left residents looking for ways to beat the heat. In Soundview, kids cooled off by jumping through sprinklers, while some chose to stay inside, enjoying free air conditioning at the James Monroe Senior Center.

Other Bronx residents say they kept cool by heading to Orchard Beach for a dip in the water. Officials say that whether heading outdoors or staying at home, it's important to drink plenty of water.
