MELROSE - An NYPD officer is recovering in a hospital after being shot at least three times in Melrose Monday.

Officer Robert Salerno, 25, was shot while responding to a 911 call at the Morrisania Air Rights houses. He was hit twice in the abdomen. His bullet-resistant vest blocked another bullet.

On Tuesday, Salerno remained at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in critical but stable condition.

The shooting occurred around noon at 3073 Park Ave. A home health care aide called 911 to say her client's son threatened her with a gun and had slapped her.

The son, Santiago Urena, opened fire on police. Officers returned fire, shooting 21 times.

Urena was later found dead inside with a gunshot wound to the head. New York City's medical examiner has ruled that Urena was killed by a volley of return fire, not a self-inflicted gunshot, which authorities orginally said might have been the case.
