MOUNT HOPE PARK - A city councilman is calling on the city Department of Parks and Recreation to maintain grounds that have fallen into disrepair.

Councilman Fernando Cabrera says neighbors tell him Mount Hope Park was once an oasis, but is now overrun with weeds, garbage and stray cats.

The parks department used to maintain the grounds, but later stopped and shut the park's gates.

Cabrera says the parks department received more than $5 million in capital funding three years ago to clean up parks in his district. He says he has yet to see any improvements.

The Department of Parks and Recreation says Mayor Michael Bloomberg has allotted an additional $1 million to fix Mount Hope Garden. The department says it is looking for a design consultant to outline a plan for repairs.
