CITY ISLAND - A Bronx couple's hobby of beekeeping is paying dividends to the community.

Dr. Patrick Gannon and his wife Nancy have been working with medical researchers at Hofstra University in an effort to find definitive evidence that honey can treat the symptoms of allergies before they occur.

"We're in the process of trying to prove how it works," said Gannon. "We know it works, but that's anecdotal evidence. Because we're scientists, we need definitive evidence."

They currently house six hives in their backyard with more than 1 million bees hard at work. Altogether, their bees are expected to produce more than 600 pounds of honey.

When they are not trying to use their honey as an antidote, the couple sells their bounty to City Island shops.
