NEW YORK - Critics and supporters of the Community Safety Act debated whether the NYPD needs reform and oversight at City Hall today.

The City Council could vote to install an inspector general to oversee the NYPD practices. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Commissioner Ray Kelly have insisted that the extra oversight is unnecessary and confusing for the department.

The Community Safety Act, born from recent accusations of unfair treatment, is legislation aimed at police reform and protecting the public from discriminatory profiling.

A vote from the City Council could come as early as Wednesday, June 26.
