THE BRONX - Neighbors and advocates seeking to slow down a proposed outdoor mega mall at a vacant lot along Interstate 95 say it will create more traffic in the area.

The MTA-owned lot, bordering Gun Hill Road, would become the Baychester Square Shopping Center. Currently, it's a defunct golf range.

Grid Properties, the developer, says it would include retailers and restaurants, creating hundreds of permanent jobs.

But in the immediate area, there is already the Mall at Bay Plaza and another retail space across the street.

The advocacy group Speak Up for a Better Bronx has filed a Change.org petition against the plan, and about 500 supporters have signed on, although the group says 64,000 residents have "signed their names to say they do not want more traffic, poor air quality and negatively impacted quality of life."

Critics say the borough needs affordable housing, senior services and more parks.

The first public hearings will be held on the proposal within the next 30 days. They are expected to carry on for seven months.
