NEW YORK - The final day has arrived to sign up for private health insurance in the new online markets created by President Barack Obama's signature health care law, also known as Obamacare.

New Yorkers who do not yet have coverage need to enroll in the state's insurance exchange, called New York State of Health, rather than the national HealthCare.gov site.

Those shopping for insurance are able to pick from several medical and dental plans. You're also able to compare insurance options and calculate costs online, in person, over the phone or even by mail.

According to the New York State Health Department, more than 70 percent of those who have signed up since Oct. 1 had been previously uninsured. The Obama Administration says that nationally, more than 6 million Americans have signed up under the Affordable Care Act.

Anyone who misses the deadline today will face a monthly fee for not being insured.

The New York State of Health website is currently up and running. The Obama administration's health care website, though, is having some set backs due to heavy traffic.

Those who start an application but cannot finish because of technical problems will get extra time, but today is the last official day to sign up for a plan.
