THE BRONX - As talks continue among Republican state senators over a gay marriage bill, protesters gathered outside state Sen. Ruben Diaz, Sr.'s (D-Bronx) offices in Morrisania to rally against the upcoming vote.
Activists from the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization prayed and chanted, urging Diaz not to vote in favor of the same-sex marriage legislation.
The Democratic-led state Assembly passed the gay marriage bill yesterday, bringing New York one step closer toward becoming the sixth and largest state in the U.S. to legalize same-sex marriage.
However, those who oppose the legislation say marriage should only be between a man and a woman, and they are hoping that the GOP will remain on their side.
"We all believe wholeheartedly that we have to stick to what the Bible says," says Sanaris Gross, of the New York Hispanic Clergy Organization.
People on both sides of the issue say they want the state senators to vote with their conscience.
