NEW YORK - Voters in the five boroughs have overwhelmingly selected Bill de Blasio as the next mayor of New York City.

The public advocate met with Mayor Michael Bloomberg just hours after he defeated former MTA Chairman Joe Lhota by nearly 50 percentage points.

De Blasio, who proudly calls himself a progressive, has laid out a liberal agenda, which includes a tax hike on the wealthy to fund universal pre-Kindergarten. He also plans on making several changes to Bloomberg's policies, including the controversial stop-and-frisk police tactic.

De Blasio's victory makes him the first Democratic mayor in more than two decades. He's also poised to surpass the record for the largest margin of victory by a non-incumbent since five-borough elections began in 1897.

The mayoral swap will take place on Jan. 1.
