HUNTS POINT - The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is donating land to a Hunts Point park.

Barretto Point Park is expected to get 1.2 acres of additional space by spring of 2014. The park is only an acre now.

The additional space is coming from a former storage area, which will take the DEP four to six months to cleanse. The parcel will then be handed over to the Parks Department to finalize.

The DEP says the existing ground has been tested and is environmentally sound, but the agency will still use a state grant to add two feet of dirt and topsoil over the entire parcel.
