Department of Sanitation calls in emergency snow laborers

NEW YORK - The Department of Sanitation is calling in its emergency snow laborers to help with storm cleanup.

Anyone already registered should report to the sanitation garage listed on their ID cards, or you can head to your local station between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. to sign up.

Emergency laborers receive $12 an hour, but the pay increases to $18 an hour after the first 40 hours. You must be at least 18 years old, eligible to work in the U.S. and be able to handle heavy physical labor.

City residents are also being told that they may be responsible for snow removal anyway. The owner, tenant or any other person in charge of a lot or building must clear the snow and ice from their sidewalk within four hours from the time the snowfall stops. If it tapers off after 9 p.m., you have until 11 a.m. to clear the walkways, but remember not to throw shoveled snow into the street or onto fire hydrants.
