BORICUA COLLEGE - With a hot weekend ahead, city health officials are encouraging people to drink tap water and not worry about contracting Legionnaires' disease.

Officials attended a community meeting at Boricua College Friday for concerned residents. They say the outbreak is not officially over, but it is well contained.

Health officials assured residents that the tap water is completely safe to drink, home air conditioners are safe to use and buildings in the Bronx with cooling towers have been tested and are safe.

"It's very important, particularly as we go into a hot and humid time period this week, that people know the drinking water in New York City does not have legionella," says Dr. Jane Bedell, of the city Department of Health. "You cannot get the disease there, and the tap water is very safe to drink."
