THE BRONX - Officials from the Department of Transportation (DOT) met with the City Council today at a hearing about potholes.

The DOT reassured council members it is at work fixing the city?s hundreds of thousands of potholes, with its road-resurfacing project set to start at the end of March. But the department's officials stressed that they need the public's help in knowing where the potholes are.

At the hearing, Councilman James Vacca (D-The Bronx) said he was concerned with the amount of time it takes for the DOT to fill potholes, which could take as long as 30 days. Officials told the City Council most are fixed within 14 days, though Vacca says it should take five.

"Winter does not finish when the snow is gone - winter finishes when the potholes are all filled," said Vacca.

According to the DOT, almost 117,000 potholes have already been filled this year, and it has received an additional $2 million to help pay for extra crews. Officials are asking for residents to report any potholes they see, or else they won't know about them. The public can report potholes by calling 311 or visiting a special website set up by the city.
