Diaz: Close Bronx rubber rooms

THE BRONX - Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. is pushing state legislators to permanently close the borough's rubber rooms.

The rubber room is a reassignment center where teachers are suspended with pay until a hearing is called for their incident.

Teacher Francisco Garabitos says he was forced to retire early because he was tired of waiting for his hearing. He was suspended with pay for two years at $100,000 per year for allegedly fighting with a student.

There are currently seven rubber rooms in New York City, and Diaz says he hopes they will be shut down soon after he submits his legislation to Albany. The Department of Education says an overhaul of the system is necessary.
