NEW YORK - Distracted Driving Awareness Month has officially begun, and experts say the problem goes far beyond the phone.

According to the Casey Feldman Foundation, three-quarters of all distracted driving injuries and deaths are unrelated to cell phones. The group, which aims to put an end to behind-the-wheel distractions, says eating, putting on makeup, children and reaching for things such as a GPS are major problems too.

New York State already bans texting and making hand-held calls while driving, but officials are urging everyone to make an effort to eliminate other distractions and keep all eyes on the road.

AAA estimates that distracted driving leads to about 5,000 deaths every year. A recent national poll from AT&T also revealed that 43 percent of drivers admit to texting while driving, calling it a habit.
