(09/06/10) SOUNDVIEW - With back-to-school time just around the corner, experts are warning parents that heavy backpacks can cause serious medical problems in children.

Dr. Jane Fitzgerald says backpacks with two wide adjustable straps will evenly distribute the backpack's weight on a child. She suggests parents pack their child's heaviest items first, and keep pens, pencils and other sharp objects in the bag far from their children's bodies. After being fully packed, the backpack should hang less than four inches below a child's waist.

Doctors also suggest parents buy backpacks that fit the child's body.
