THE BRONX - The spotlight is on breast cancer after Food Network star Sandra Lee announced that she has the disease.
Lee, the longtime girlfriend of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, made the announcement Tuesday morning on ABC's "Good Morning America." She says that she has since had a lumpectomy, but will undergo a double mastectomy this week.
Lee says that she decided to talk about her illness because she wants to encourage other women to get screened.
The American Cancer Society recommends screening for breast cancer at 40 years old, 10 years earlier than government guidelines.
Doctors in the Bronx say that early detection is key in beating cancer.
Montefiore Einstein Center of Cancer Care will have a free breast and cervical cancer screening event on May 30.
