NEW YORK CITY - The Department of Education kicked off its annual Summer Meals Program today.

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi and local elected officials were among those giving out food today to children 18 and younger at Mullaly Park today.

"For kids to enjoy these summer meals while they are free," said Romanita Rivera, one parent at the park. "They need to be healthy, especially while they are out of school. Some families don't have it."

More than 8 million free meals will be distributed through Sept. 2 at over 1,000 sites throughout all five boroughs and no ID or registration is required.
