DOT scraps Major Deegan Expwy. project

THE BRONX - The Department of Transportation has indefinitely shelved the expansion of Major Deegan Expressway after members of the South Bronx community had unanimously rejected the project.

Local residents say the expansion project, which was set to begin in 2011, would have encroached on space set aside for a major revitalization project.

"That will increase our quality of life here in the South Bronx," says Arthur Mychal Johnson, member of Community Board 1, of the cancellation.

South Bronx residents say they are now waiting for the right developer to come along and transform their neighborhood.
