THE BRONX - Dozens gathered outside City Hall today to urge city lawmakers to reduce the deportation of illegal immigrants who have been arrested.

Officials say the city spends about $55 million a year detaining and deporting illegal immigrants who were wrongly accused or arrested for misdemeanor crimes.

Protesters say the program is costing taxpayers millions of dollars and makes immigrants fearful to come forward to report crimes, making neighborhoods less safe.
