THE BRONX - An attempted rapist who was accidentally released from custody last week is now back in police custody.

The assistant district attorney on the case says Edward Dawkins was recently found at a homeless shelter. Police say he was originally sentenced last Tuesday to nine months in jail for attacking a woman inside the elevator of a building on Park Avenue the day after New Year’s.

Prosecutors say Dawkins pleaded guilty to charges of forcible touching, unlawful imprisonment and attempted assault in the third degree.

The victim says she could not be happier now that she doesn't have to constantly look over her shoulder.

There is currently no information on how Dawkins was accidentally released in the first place.
