QUEENS - Elected officials in New York spoke out against President Donald Trump's immigration directives that resulted in the detainment of refugees at John F. Kennedy International Airport Saturday.

Rep. Nydia Velazquez and Rep. Jerrold Nadler were at the airport Saturday to demand the release of refugees.

One of them, Hameed Khalid Darweesh, was detained then released soon after. He worked as an interpreter for the U.S. Army when it invaded Iraq in 2003. Eleven other detainees were still at JFK Saturday evening.

"This should not happen in America," says Rep. Nydia Velazquez.

She called the executive order "mean-spirited, ill-conceived and ill-advised."

Gov. Andrew Cuomo also spoke out saying, "I never thought I'd see the day when refugees who have fled war-torn countries in search of a better life, would be turned away at our doorstep. We are a nation of bridges, not walls."
